"The Duke" ~ John Wayne

Everyone that knows Brian, knows that he is a DIE HARD Western buff. I mean seriously into Westerns. Movies, trinkets, actors, horses, etc. Pretty much anything that is western themed. His biggest thing is Bonanza. The Cartwrights. The Pondarosa. Little Joe. Cochiese.

With that being said... can I share with you some photos from our detour in Winterset, Iowa? Yes, while we were on our 2,000 mile journey home from Minnesota earlier this week, we took a 14 mile detour off of the Interstate and went to see the Birthplace of John Wayne.

(So I guess the drive home would have been alot quicker if we didn't make that stop huh?)

(Don't mind that I was dressed for a 30 + hour drive in a rented Hyundai Elantra)

Emotionally Exhausted!

Wow
That's all I can say! 2010 has been an eventful year yet for me. We've been running and running and running since prior to our Wedding, (as most of us do) and it's literally been NON-STOP for us!

We thought after our AHR in Minnesota we would have time to breathe and relax. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

It all started during our 2 week long stay in Minnesota. During our stay, we endured some severe weather ~ even having a Tornado touch down!! It was the first time I've ever been in some extreme rain, wind and just so much thunder and lightning! I even had a dentist appointment scheduled as well as Brian and his yearly physical with his doctor. Oh... I also had some oral surgery done too. Yeah, NOT FUN.

Thankfully, the weather cleared up for the day of our Reception and it was nice outside! Couldn't have asked for better weather, considering the storm that had just passed ~ and the storm that was forcasted to come still.

Our Journey Home

On our journey back home, we had to drive 3 hours to Madison, Wisconsin for our flight only to have a two hour layover back in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Don't ask why...long story) We made it to Madison with enough time to go thru security and board the plane. The flight to Minneapolis was short. Very uneventful. We were able to grab a bite to eat prior to boarding and I'm so glad we did. Once we boarded the plane, the weather out was starting to look bad. The plane we were on was HUGE. It was a 757, and there were never ending rows!! It took quite a while to get all of the passengers on board and once we did, we had to sit there and wait. And wait. And wait. The weather had gotten worse, and the Captain kindly made an announcement that due to the severe weather including the lightning, the groundscrew was not allowed to be outside during that time. We had to sit tight and wait it out until they got the all clear and was able to get all the luggage onboard.

An hour later, we were then told we could de-board the plane to stretch out, use the bathrooms, and what not. Needless to say, I took advantage of that! Being stuck on that plane for that long with the hail beating down on the plane and the rain pouring SIDEWAYS was pretty scarey.

After about a half hour or so, we were given the green light to board the plane again and this time, after just a bit of a delay, we were airborne. Yay! Needless to say, our flight was delayed by a total of a little over 3 hours. We should have touched down in San Francisco at 7:30 p.m., but didn't make it there until about 10:30 p.m.

And... we still had another hour and 45 minutes or so of a drive home from there!

Back Home Finally........or so we thought

Was I ever so glad to be back home! Finally! All wedding related activities were done! Finished! We can get our Den (which had been consumed with wedding related stuff for such a long time) cleaned out! We can get on with our lives! We can start focusing on HOME.

Unfortunately, a week after we returned home, Brian's one and only Uncle had passed away. We were completely torn. We had just left Minnesota but we knew that we had to be there for the funeral. We looked at air fare, and it was astronomical....especially since we were looking to travel less than 7 days in advance. After much debate, we decided that we would rent a car and drive the 2,000 mile trek. It was just too expensive to fly Brian, Elyssa and I. Much cheaper to rent a car. This way, the three of us would all be able to go versus us paying more than renting the car and gas for just Brian to fly.

We left on Tuesday late afternoon and made it to our destination Thursday about a little after Midnight. (LATE, LATE, LATE Wednesday night). It was quite the trek, but we did it. With Brian and I taking turns driving / resting, we made it. The funeral was scheduled for Thursday, so we HAD to be there in time! We did have to pull over in Wyoming and we both slept for about 2 hours. Neither of us could continue without a power nap!

Driving back home we didn't have to rush it so much. We had a nice leisure drive, however we took a different route which was quicker time wise. We left Sunday morning at about 9:30 and made it home Monday early evening at 5:45 p.m. We also stopped and slept, but we slept for about 3 hours this time.

Back to normal

We've been home for a full day already and Brian went back to work this morning. I need to get back to the swing of things and get our lives back to some sort of normalcy. We need to get back into our every day routine like we had 7 months ago!

I need to get our Den cleaned out and presentable. Because right now, you can't even step foot in there. There is too much junk! Seriously. Way too much stuff that needs to be tossed out or given away to GoodWill.

So, despite the fact that I have TONS of pictures from our trip, I need to priortize my life and my days. I will share photos with you all in the near future once I get back on track!

I do want to share a few photos with you guys ~ family photos that were taken at the luncheon after the funeral. Brian's cousins and their families. It's their dad who passsed away. Brian hadn't seen his cousins in 15 years. Since HIS dad's funeral. It's unfortunate that it's during times like these that bring families together.

Mall of America!!!!

The Mall of America is Awesome! It is 78 Acres big! It used to be the home of the Metropolitan Stadium and as you can see from the photo above, that is the where the original Home Plate of the stadium used to be.
The middle of the massive mall consists of a Theme Park ~ Nickelodeon Universe. There are rollar coasters, a Dora Ferris Wheel, a Log Ride, and various other theme park rides throughout! It is unreal!
Of course, the Mall itself is amazing! It has over 520 stores on three levels of pedestrian walkways, with a fourth level on the East side. While we were there, there was construction going on and read there is addition planned north of the mall that will allow for up to 900 stores. The Mall is organized into four different zones, each with its own decorative style.
It is AMAZING and a MUST SEE if you're ever in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area!

We spent A LOT of time with Brian's three grandchildren on this trip and we had an awesome time with them. The photo's above is when we met them for lunch at McDonalds! We had a good time visiting!!

~* Amish Country *~

A Buggy with Van Seats

Old Blade Push Mower ~ And the yard was HUGE

There are a lot of Amish living going on in the Country and one day I asked Brian if we can take a drive into some of the Amish area. We came across this little Amish Community and despite the fact that it was in the early afternoon, there wasn't much going on activity wise. We did see maybe two or three Amish Children doing chores. I was also able to see a horse drawn buggy on the road, but didn't feel right pulling out the camera and snapping a photo then. :)

Of course there are a ton more photos to share, but for some reason, Blogger is giving me a hard time right now uploading them all, so I'll leave you all with these!!

Elyssa's 8th Grade Graduation

So, my baby has moved on to High School! Can you belive it?!?

I won't get into the big controversy about whether or not 8th Grade Graduation Ceremonys are overrated or not, but yes....can I just say that a two hour long ceremony and 15 minute speeches from the Valedictorian's regarding their "entire lives of memories" was interesting nonetheless.

Weekend Wrap Up

Although it's already Tuesday, I'm doing my Weekend Wrap Up post a day late!

This past weekend was totally jam packed with fun stuff. We had a surprise 70th Birthday Party for a very good friend of ours!

I was honored to do his cake ~ and here it is:

I also made some "Better than Sex" Cupcakes. Now, normally, this would be a cake. Knowing how much the birthday boy LOVES this cake whenever I make it, I decided I'd experiment and make 'em into cupcakes! And let me tell you, it was a complete hit!!

Brian and I had a wonderful time getting to spend time with some of our friends ~ old and new! It's times like these where you just sit around, relax, and enjoy life that makes me so happy!!

I also made a few other snacks / treats.... here's one of them:

Chocolate dipped Pretzel Rods with Rainbow Non-Pareils. Totally Yumny!!!!

So, as you all can see, I've been experimenting and adding Sweet Treats to my Etsy Store as I 'perfect' them.

Stay tuned for more pictures!!!!!

Clever Confections Blog

So, I started a Blog for my Clever Confections 'business'.

It's still "under construction" but I'll link it here:

I will be blogging about my everyday trials and tribulations with cakes, wedding cakes, cupcakes, candies, sweet treats and anything baking related!

The blog will serve as both a 'website' as such which contains information as to what we have to offer, delivery / shipping options and prices, as well as someplace where I can share with everyone what is up and coming in my Etsy Shop.

As I mentioned above, it's still under construction, so if you have any suggestions or criticisms, please feel free to let me know!
Thanks everyone!!!!

~ Margarita Cupcakes ~

I've been repeatedly asked by friends, family members and acquaintences if I had added anything new and exciting to my Etsy Shop recently.

My answer the last couple of months have simply been: "NOPE"

What? With a Destination Wedding, (a cruise nonetheless) with 33 cruising guests, and two At Home Receptions to prepare for, who has time?!?

I've been taking orders from clients for Chocolate Starfish, SeaShells and Sand Dollars the last couple of weeks, and I do have a couple of Wedding Cakes and Event Cakes on the books, so in between all of our remaining Wedding Related Events, I will be steadily working diligently!!

Recently, a friend shared a recipe with me for "Margarita" Cupcakes. Unfortunately, I didn't save the link she so kindly shared with me, so I did a little research on the 'ole Information Superhighway!

I found a variety of receipes out there for "Margarita" Cupcakes, and with some tweaking and combining of various receipes, I have come up with one that seems to me will be
very yummy!

So.....Today, I experimented!

While the presentation is not 100% perfected at this very moment, can I just tell you that the combination of the hint of lime in the cupcake portion itself is simply AMAZING!

Not to mention the slight hint of Lime and Tequilla in the Buttercream Frosting is to die for!!!

Here's a photo (or two) of what I ended up with...remember, this is just the very first round of experimenting!
(I'm trying to find some Lime Wedge Candies to top these puppies with!! Not having any luck!!)

I'm still working on this particular recipe, but just thought I'd give you all a "heads up" as to what will be up and coming at Clever Confections!!!

Be sure to visit my Etsy Shop!

Our not so FUN 4 day Memorial Day Camping Trip!

Well, since Brian had Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday scheduled off this wonderful Memorial Day holiday, I convinced Brian that we should take a camping trip!
Despite the fact that I'm still trying to recover from my illness, he agreed!
At the very last minute, (Thursday morning) we decided we'll head to Sequoia National Park since the internet says that the weather will be in the 70's..... Our original place to go was Yosemite, but their weather forecast predicted rain and snow.
So, we packed up enough gear for 4 people...made a pit stop to the SuperTarget on our way to Sequoia (yes, Brian's place of employment) and bought a few more necessities.
Then drove our way into the park.
It took us a while to find a spot and set up camp. Mind you, we got a very late start and by the time we actually found a decent spot that we liked, it was closer to 5:30. Not too much time to go looking all over for prime real estate before darkness set in!!!
It was cold, but not too cold. Between Brian and I we got the tent up right before it got dark, but then we had to haul everything into our campsite in the dark. We only had one flash light to work with because NOBODY sells the 9 watt, flurocent, U Shaped Bulb that we need for our brand new Coleman Lantern.
This is what we woke up to early Friday Morning!
(Enjoy the photos and please keep your laughing to a minimum)

.....

Here's more photos for your viewing pleasure!

I have more photos to share, but I thought I'd give you guys a little chuckle with what prompted us to pack up after breakfast Friday morning and head back home.
Hope you guys are enjoying your three day Holiday!

Happy Sunday!!

It's Sunday and althought it's rather windy outside, the sun is shining and I woke up feeling better than I have the last three weeks!! Not 100% better, but on the road to recovery!! My allergies are coming back big time, and I would have thought that these 'strong' antibiotics would have killed even those allergy bugs in my system...... but I suppose not!

Okay...let's discuss our AHR coming up here in a month. June 19th to be exact. We are having our 2nd AHR in Minnesota ~ Brian's home town!! I'm so very excited to be going back to Minnesota again!

Originally, we were going to do the same Boarding Pass Invites as we did for our California AHR, but it's too much work and with me being sick for as long as I was/am, I kinda ran out of time!! So, I elected to go the cheap, easy route and just bought some invites at Michaels and be done with it.

Here's the final product:

Not the Boarding Pass Invites, but so much more less time consuming! Considering I need to get these out in the mail tomorrow!!

Yes, I'm so looking forward to our trip to Minnesota! I wish we could take in a Twins game at the new Target Field, but I don't think the Twins are going to have any home games while we're there. Boo!!!

That's okay though... Brian has our agenda full with appointments!! Dentist appointments for the both of us, as well as a Doctor's appointment for himself! He also has scheduled an appointment with his Financial Advisor and also his Accountant. :) Nice huh? Yep... he squeezes in as much as he can while we're there!
Not to mention we'll be having a surprise 50th Birthday part for him while we're there as well! He doesn't even know about that! He thinks we're celebrating it at the AHR, but we're not! His best friend wants to do something totally separate from the AHR so we'll be celebrating it on his actual birthday!
Oh, and did I mention that Father's Day is the day after our AHR?!?
Needless to say, we're in for quite a 'vacation'!!!
Hope everyone is having an AWESOME Sunday!!

Among the Living Again!!

Yay!! I woke up this morning feeling MUCH, MUCH better than I have the last week or two!!

Last night I started on my "For Sale" page in my planning bio. I posted a few things and got an overwhelming response! Wow! I added a few more things to it today and will get to add more once our AHR in Minnesota is over with in June!

If you want to take a look at what I have, please feel free to do so! Here's the link:

I also put up a few of our wedding photos here in the blog! Just click on the "photo" tab in the menu bar. :)

I'm off to go conquer the world this fine Friday afternoon!!! I haven't been out of the house in a couple of days, so I'm itching to get out!! I'm definitely going to hit STARBUCKS!!! :)

Have a great Friday!!!!

I dislike being sick!!

Can I just tell you guys that having this Upper Respiratory Infection is kicking my behind!!! I've had this for close to a week now and it's a doozy!!! I've been on the antibiotics for 4 days now, and I should be feeling better right?!? But nooooooo, it's not any worse, but by no means is it any better.

Today is "Date Day Thursday" and its been a tradition for Brian and I to spend the day together starting off with brunch at Panera. Needless to say, we skipped that today. And we're also skipping our $1.50 Margarita Night tonight. So sad!!

With him home today, its like I'm on lock down! He's banned me to the couch or bed. Ugh... not fun, but I suppose the rest is much needed!

I'm hoping to feeling good enough to post some photos of our amazing wedding tomorrow!!

Happy Thursday!!

Ah....Married life!! :)

I'm back and I'm MARRIED!!! But, I'm also under the weather! It seems that I've been diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Infection, borderline Pnemonia. Boo!! I feel like death warmed over big time!

I have tons and tons of pictures to share with everyone here, but I think I'll take it easy for the rest of the week.

Hope everyone is having a great week!!!

T-Minus 3 Days!!!!!

Let's talk about shoes! I bought another pair of shoes that were really super cute. I love the little bow w/ the bling on them!

And my Welcome Bags for our cruising guests. They are FINALLY done! I love the Welcome Bag Tag with the StarFish Charm on it! :)

And last photo for the day, but certainly not least.... my fixed BridesMaids Bouquets. I sent these to a friend who lives in Chicago and she fixed them for me! I'm so very happy with them!!!!! She's the best!! :)

AND......we leave in THREE DAYS. Can you flippin belive it? In three days there will be a group of 7 of us headed down to San Diego and meet up with 8 more cruising guests! Then on Monday, we board the marvelous Cruise Ship Elation for a 5 day adventure!!! On Wednesday while we're on Catalina Island, we will MARRIED!!! :) Ahhhh....so stinkin' excited!

Happy Wednesday!!!

ONE WEEK!!!

oh yes..... one week from today, we will be leaving on a journey that will be one of the best journey's of my life!!!!!

But wait.... okay.... so you all know that we will be leaving next Saturday which will be the start of our AMAZING wedding week!! (Okay...10 days of wedding bliss) We plan on leaving somewhere in the late, late evening for a 7 hour drive down to San Diego. We have several vehicles in this 'caravan' of people heading down in the late night / very early morning of Sunday and it's going to be a blast!!!!!!

Guess what I did?!? Yes, call me an idiot, but hey...business is business!!! So, I was contacted by a local Boutique owner who had come across my Etsy Store. She told me that they are having an event called "A day at the Boutique" which will feature approximately 65 vendors! She has 45 vendors on a regular basis in her Boutique (several Etsy Store owners) and are looking for about 20 more for the day! She further advised that she didn't have any vendors with anything "Edible" and would love it if I would consider participating. The even is slated for next Saturday the 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., however the Boutique is opened until 6:00 p.m.

So, did I commit to participating in something like that on THE DAY that we're leaving for our AMAZING wedding cruise vacation?!? You bet your bottom dollar I did!!! Well, the decision wasn't made lightly, let me tell you. In fact, it was Brian who actually persuaded me into actually doing it. He said that I am more 'relaxed' and 'in my own element' when I'm baking and/or creating cakes.

I will only be offering Cupcakes (three flavors = Chocolate, French Vanilla & my speciality Irish Car Bomb) along with Cookies (Cut-out decorated type) and also various Chocolates (Sea Shells, Star Fish, and Sand Dollars). It isn't going to be difficult at all to whip those up! And for me, the idea is to get my name out there so people order their future event cakes from me!!! The sales that day aren't that important to me ~ it's spreading the word about my business and, as I mentioned just now, getting future orders!!!

**************************************

Now, on to wedding related topics! I am soo excited and ready to leave already!! I've pretty much got everything done with the exception of some little things. I need to hem Brian's ceremony suit pants; finish putting the welcome bags together; make my 'must take' list for the photographer; put together a 'Welcome Packet' for our cruising guests which will contain their table assignments for dinner in the dining room as well as a Cruising Guest Directory which lets everyone know what cabin everyone is in. Little things like that! Oh... and then I have to pack. And let me tell you, we are going to have a few of those 18 gallon Rubbermaid Totes coming with us! I'll have to take a picture of everything we're taking with us and share them with you guys! It's going to be a sight to see, that's for sure!!!!

Well, I hope you all have a Happy Saturday!!! Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

XOXOXO,
